Aluminum Can Recycling
Fifteen years ago, SI Valley of the Sun purchased 5 aluminum can collections bins. The bins are placed in strategic locations throughout Sun City, AZ. Processing and recycling of the cans is handled through an arrangement with a local Lion's Club.

Recycling Plastic Bags
Keeping plastic bags out of landfills is a by-product of SI Valley of the Sun's Soroptimist Thrift Shop, located at 107th and Peoria Avenues in Sun City.  The club has received recognition from the Golden West Region of Soroptimist International of the Americas for this ongoing recycling of bags for purchases made at the shop.

Cerro Gordo School, Panama
Five years ago SI Valley of the Sun adopted a small, rural public school in Cerro Gordo, Republic of Panama. This school  struggles to provide an education from 1st-8th grade to children of the surrounding area.

Sojourner Center
Since 1977, Sojourner Center has provided shelter and support services to thousands of individuals affected by domestic violence. Through empowerment, families discover hope and have the opportunity to build a new future free from violence. As the nation's largest domestic violence shelter, Sojourner Center is a tireless advocate for domestic violence victims and survivors. With the continued support of the community, Sojourner Center can help women and children overcome the impact of domestic violence, one life at a time. SIVOS is a proud supporter of Sojourner Center.
Vocational/Technical Scholarships Awarded
2008 was the third year of this continuing program. In a partnership with Credit Union West, a local non-profit credit union, and Rotary Foundation of District 4 Arizona, we created three scholarships for women high school graduates wishing to obtain technical or vocational training.

Eve's Place
SIVOS has raised funds to assist with the creation and expansion of a safe house for women and children in the West Valley. Our contributions helped Eve’s Place move to a larger house which increased the available bed occupancy from 7 to 23.

One of the ongoing missions of Soroptimist is combating domestic violence, and our club has taken that mission seriously. Donations are derived from sales at our Thrift Shop where members and volunteers donate over
2300 hours a year.  SIVOS has formed a close working relationship with Eve’s Place continues to support the organization.
Helping Hands for Single Moms
In 2008, SIVOS supported a non-profit, Helping Hands for Single Moms, by paying for one year of Internet access for the women in their program. Helping Hands is a community service organization in its fifth year of operation.

Interfaith Community Care
When Interfaith Community Care reached out to the community during their capital campaign for a new intergenerational campus in Surprise, SI Valley of the Sun stepped up and pledged $100,000 to be donated over a five year period.  Two years of that commitment have been met.

Shoebox Ministry
Throughout the year SI Valley of the Sun collects sundries to donate to Shoebox Ministry, a non-profit organization that puts together shoeboxes of personal hygiene items and delivers then to area homeless and abuse shelters.  Our club also provides a monetary grant to this worthy organization.

Style Show at Senior Center
SIVOS has held two style shows at Chez Nous Community Center in November to promote the Soroptimist Thrift Shop. The show focused on donated clothing that was available for purchase at our shop. The show resulted in nearly $200 in sales raised awareness of the Soroptimist organization and the existence of the Thrift Shop.
